Merchant Navy : A career on the high seas

MERCHANT NAVY
AN EXCITING CAREER
Merchant Navy fleet consists of non-combatant commercial ships,which deals with transporting passengers and cargo by sea. The fleet includes cargo liners ,tankers,passenger liners and other vehicles .There are three departments in a merchant navy ship-the deck department,the engine department and service department.The job of the deck staff is to supervise cargo and passengers.The engine department is responsible for the engines,equipments and other hardware.The service department deals with kitchen,laundry,medical and other services.

Eligibllity : Candidates with B.Sc degree in Nautical Science are eligible for the post of officers while those with degree in mechanical/marine engineering are eligible for joining engineering department.
Candidates who have passed 10 +2 or equivalent exam with physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are eligible for the position of Deck Cadets, provided they undergo per-sea training and get work experience.The candidates also have to fulfil certain medical norms
All those who join the Merchant Navy must obtain a certificate of competency under the regulations in force in india.The examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Mumbai

Desirable Qualities : This profession needs people who are physically fit and have a strong mental ability.one should be of risk-taking nature and willing to be away from house for long periods of time.Responsibility, team-spirit and self-discipline are some of the sought-after qualities in this field.
